Research and Analysis: Textual Analysis of That's Alright-Laura Mvula

What are the characteristics of the genre in the music video?
-That's Alright is a soul pop video
-Video uses a mixture of slow motion to create a soul tempo and fast pace to take the song back to its pop tempo

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
-Most lyrics in this music video do link to visuals being seen:
-"I will never be what you want and thats alright, Cause my skin ain't light and my body ain't tight" the visuals show people sat down whilst the artist and dancers are on the opposite of the room, showing there is a divide between the two groups
-"Who made you the centre of the universe?" as she goes into the mirror showing that she is not just looking at what she can see in her reflection. Also, the artists is in a black room wearing a extravagant red dress showing that she is changing who is the centre of attention.
-"I see the beauty in your eyes", a young girl appears from the bath wearing a white dress showing her innocence as she does not know about other peoples opinions on what beauty is.

What is the relationship between music and visuals?
-The visuals often match up to the tempo of the song at points through out the music for example. When the dancers first appear in a two shot at the beginning of the sequence they are moving in unison with the opening beat and also in synchronisation with each other.

Are there close ups of the artist and image motifs?
-There are many close ups used throughout mainly of the artists face and features such as, her eyes this could be used as she goes into the mirror she is seeing herself as other people do, but her eyes are telling her the truth. Also, the close ups are generally used when the artist says "Cause my skin ain't light"and goes into a close-up of her face showing her skin colour.

Is the music video performance, narrative or concept?
- Performance- artist is constantly singing through out
-Narrative- In house with divide against other people

Conclusion
Overall,I think this music video is interesting as it matches both the Soul and Pop of the genre using its visuals to emphasise the lyrics.

Research and Analysis: Textual Analysis of Gold Dust, Dj Fresh

What are the characteristics of the genre in the music video?
-Gold Dust is a dance video
-Conventions of the genre: upbeat, fastpaced/tempo,bouncy/lively, energetic
-Culture relates to the type of dance- american culture/south america
-This video has slow motion, this breaks up the sequene so the audience do not get lost and also exaggerates the fast paced action
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
-As this is a concept video the lyrics do not have a clean cut direct link to the song lyrics
however, there are a few cases where they do link when the lyrics e.g. "running away" the visuals are as the actors are skipping backwards, "hands up" the skipper put their hands up, gold dust-there is someone in a gold jacket
-Skipping is totally unrelated to the song lyrics from the jumping aspect
What is the relationship between music and visuals?
-Visuals often match up to the tempo of the song at certain points for example, during the tempo build up close ups/ establishing shots are used i.e someone shooting a basketball are used then when it reaches the peak it goes back to fast action skipping
-However slow motion shots are used during the heavy up tempo sections to provied a contrast whihc makes the skipping appear faster like it is in fastforward
Are there close ups of the artist and image motifs?
-There are many close ups used especially of young children looking/reacting to the older people/teenage skipping this establishes culture more, as they dont have much money so cant afford to do typical sports-skipping been passed down through generationthe matching girls tshirts say "the new frontear" which could mean "frontier" this means developent inviting research linking to Dj Fresh
Is the music video performance-based, narrative-based or concept based?
-Concept based with an element of narrative
-Concept-skipping
-Girls/culture-narrative
Conclusion
Overall it is a very interesting video which covers the main convention of dance music videos
to improve it would perhaps add a bit more relevance/build up to two girls as they randomly appeared.
