Research and Analysis: Textual Analysis of That's Alright-Laura Mvula

What are the characteristics of the genre in the music video?
-That's Alright is a soul pop video
-Video uses a mixture of slow motion to create a soul tempo and fast pace to take the song back to its pop tempo

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
-Most lyrics in this music video do link to visuals being seen:
-"I will never be what you want and thats alright, Cause my skin ain't light and my body ain't tight" the visuals show people sat down whilst the artist and dancers are on the opposite of the room, showing there is a divide between the two groups
-"Who made you the centre of the universe?" as she goes into the mirror showing that she is not just looking at what she can see in her reflection. Also, the artists is in a black room wearing a extravagant red dress showing that she is changing who is the centre of attention.
-"I see the beauty in your eyes", a young girl appears from the bath wearing a white dress showing her innocence as she does not know about other peoples opinions on what beauty is.

What is the relationship between music and visuals?
-The visuals often match up to the tempo of the song at points through out the music for example. When the dancers first appear in a two shot at the beginning of the sequence they are moving in unison with the opening beat and also in synchronisation with each other.

Are there close ups of the artist and image motifs?
-There are many close ups used throughout mainly of the artists face and features such as, her eyes this could be used as she goes into the mirror she is seeing herself as other people do, but her eyes are telling her the truth. Also, the close ups are generally used when the artist says "Cause my skin ain't light"and goes into a close-up of her face showing her skin colour.

Is the music video performance, narrative or concept?
- Performance- artist is constantly singing through out
-Narrative- In house with divide against other people

Conclusion
Overall,I think this music video is interesting as it matches both the Soul and Pop of the genre using its visuals to emphasise the lyrics.
